Changes in the level of economic development in a society or community will very likely lead to changes in the crime rate and should be expected as part of the results of planning decisions.
Abstract
Economic development in the Third World has had mixed effects on crime rates. Economic expansion in Japan has not caused overall increases in the low rate of crime except in certain areas in which the physical and demographic change has been dramatic. However, some developing nations with mixed economies involving complex regulations and multiple levels of planning face bribery and corruption problems, as well as a rising crime rate where urbanization is most rapid. Thus, crime should be expected as a byproduct of economic growth. A total of 19 references are included. (Author abstract modified)
