This paper provides an overview of the physical features of the IBM 3800, a nonimpact printer that uses both electrophotographic and laser technology. It also considers the product of the printer, describing means for forensic document examiners to identify make and particular machine of a printing product.
Abstract
Specifically discussed are the general operation of the 3800, the laser, laser modulator and optics, the electrostatic image and its development, the transfer of the image and fusing station, and the paper transport. The IBM 3800's available character sets and sizes are listed, as well as paper sizes and weights, its printing speeds, and other capabilities, such as 90 degree printing and a form overlay feature. Characteristics of the printed product of the document examiner are spacing, margins, toner marks, hash marks, character formation, pinfeed holes, and ragged edges. Several characteristics are associated with a particular machine's functioning or operation: character design (which can vary considerably depending upon user choice), arrangement of text on page, scratch marks, etc. Six references and illustrations are provided.
