It is emphasized that the insights gained from criminalistic analyses should be made known to the public so that citizens can pursue specific crime prevention measures. Police should cultivate cooperative interaction with other government institutions, private businesses, and organizations interested in forestalling crime, as well as with the citizenry at large. The media especially should be used to alert the public to crime characteristics and preventive strategies. A variety of research and development programs, police-community relations efforts, and public education projects are cited as examples from such diverse countries as Sweden, Japan, the United States, Great Britain, The Netherlands, and others.
