The national program is patterned after a demonstration experience in western Pennsylvania. Two 1-hour programs will air on public television stations across the country on Nov. 2 and Nov. 9, 1983. Local groups will organize town meetings in their communities to view the program and then evolve into task forces to educate and motivate people to take action against substance abuse. The first program, 'The Chemical Society,' will seek to convince people that a problem exists and that they should organize solutions rather than hide behind a wall of denial. The second program, 'A National Call to Action,' offers hope and guidance. Communities will be presented with guidelines on how to form a task force to prevent and combat youthful abuse. The program is being undertaken without new funding for local use. Primary responsibility is being taken by volunteers from the community, with human service professionals being called upon as resources. Each community is encouraged to shape its own approaches based upon local realities. Five resources are listed.
