Nineteen chapters explain various facets of criminology, focusing on theory, patterns of crime, and the criminal justice system.
Abstract
Attention is given to explaining and measuring crime, criminal law and criminology, early criminology, and individualistic explanations of crime. Early theorists mentioned include Adolphe Jaques Quetelet, Cesare Lombroso, and Enrico Ferri. Biogenic and psychogenic theories are described, followed by an analysis of crime and the social structure. A chapter on social control and criminal acts looks at Durkheim, social bonds, containment and deterrence theory, and evaluation and research in control and deterrence theory. Differential association theory, labeling theory, structural interaction, character contests, and criminal situations are discussed within the context of interactionist theory. Also examined are common crimes, consensual crimes, assault and murder, and rape. Crimes in occupations (such as employee theft, embezzlement, and medical fraud), criminal organization, corporate and governmental crime are topics of separate chapters. Aspects of the criminal justice system -- the police, prosecution and adjudication, probation and parole for juveniles and adults, and punishment and prisons -- are examined. A final chapter looks at criminological research and public policy. Tables; chapter glossaries, questions, and notes; and an index are provided.
