This research studied the ways in which Japanese junior and senior high school teachers cope with delinquency problems, using 296 junior high and 390 senior high school teachers as subjects.
Abstract
More active countermeasures were taken against delinquency problems in junior high than in senior high schools, although no inference was reached that junior highs had more delinquency than senior highs. Junior highs have established good systems for coping with delinquency problems. Senior highs alleged that they have small numbers of delinquent students. In junior highs, delinquent cases are mostly handled by teachers in charge; then treated by school administrators; and then as a last resort, handled by police or other appropriate authorities. In senior highs, most cases are handled in the schools and the schools are reluctant to give the cases to police or other authorities. In junior high, education is compulsory, while at the senior high level, more than a quarter of the teachers had more than 10 students who were dismissed because of their delinquent acts.
