Annotation
Starting from a philosophical reference point, the author examines a number of conditioning factors that characterize prisons and that may be conducive to impairing rehabilitative measures.
Abstract
These adverse factors of the prison environment may be remedied by more self-determination for convicts and through more intense ties linking them with the external world. The author explains the reasons whereby the cultural, recreational, and sports activities must be viewed as instrumental to this effect. Treatment elements attributed to the new penitentiary system are also noted. A total of 19 footnotes are included. (Author summary modified)
