Juvenile delinquencies in Okinawa are very similar to those in Japan directly after World War II, viewed from the perspectives of the nature of the delinquencies, the rate of abnormal EEG, and mental deficiency.
Abstract
Electroencephalographic and psychiatric investigations were performed on 31 cases in the Ryukyu Juvenile Classification and Detention Home in Okinawa, Japan, in 1967. The subjects had committed larceny, violence, sexual offenses, etc. Recidivists comprised 21 cases of the total 31. Their offenses were simple in nature and often committed in groups. In 13 cases, poor home environments or broken homes were found. The rate of mental deficiency among the subjects was very high. Ten cases had impaired intelligence, and in 25, character abnormalities were observed. EEG findings showed nine cases of abnormal EEG's, six slightly abnormal EEG's, nine borderline EEG's, and seven normal EEG's. Tables, notes, and references are provided. (Author summary modified)
