Since the 1960's, when women demanded and were begrudgingly granted positions as uniform police officers, female officers have proven their competence and are gradually gaining acceptance and respect from their male counterparts. Records show that females have done well in the academy environment, including physical, firearms, and driving environments. Efficiency reports indicate they are doing a professional and commendable job on a daily basis. Individual careers indicate that female officers are also advancing into specialized positions of high responsibility. Examples include the areas of canine training, mounted crowd control, directing a police academy, directing an internal affairs division, and plainclothes work. Photographs are provided.
