The principal recommendation is based upon an analysis of the psychiatric needs of women inmates. It is advised that three key staff should be selected immediately to administer the development and implementation of the program, staffing, budget, equipment, and construction required. At least one key project coordinator should be designated in the central office, the southwest regional office, and the institution. Further, a bureau program policy should be developed and issued nationally within 60 days, followed by a local policy within 30 days. Initially, it is suggested that the unit should be programed only as an inpatient psychiatric unit of the hospital for acutely psychotic female patients and not for correctional management problems or forensic evaluations. Further, it is recommended that the unit be adequately staffed with professional and support personnel commensurate with program requirements. Approval of an initial fiscal 1979 budget of $233,600 is recommended. Recommendations for each budget item are provided, as are the names of the task force members.
