This article describes the successful implementation of a community volunteer work program by the Westmoreland County (Pennsylvania) Adult Probation Office.
Abstract
The program provides nonprofit organizations with individuals to do various volunteer work job functions that would benefit the community by assigning probationers to such service as part of their Rehabilitative Disposition Program. As implemented in Westmoreland County, the program has succeeded due to the conscientiousness and cooperation exhibited by the probation supervisor, supervising probation officer, the client, and the nonprofit organization contact person. Problem areas experienced by the program concerned insurance for the probationers while performing community service work under the auspices of some volunteer organization and the potential threat of such service to the jobs of the organization's employees. Advantages of the program include the benefit gleaned from community service accomplished at no cost to the volunteer organization, skills learned by probationers doing such work, the client's experience of being trusted as a responsible person, and the rehabilitative function of work done in service to others.
