These two dimensions of the paper are discussed relative to two major types of rural sociological research: victimization patterns of the rural population and studies of the rural offender. Rural crime is noted as having emerged in the past several years as a new specialty area within rural sociology, and appears likely to grow in popularity. It is suggested that regional interest networks, such as those sponsored by Rural Development Centers of the Southern and Northern Central States, will be a contributing factor to the exchange of information for scholars pursuing additional research in this field.
