A trend analysis presents data from 4,000 cases of spousal abuse which occurred in and around New York City between January 1976 and December 1979. Analyses of contributing factors focus on the role of alcohol and drugs, environmental and nutritional factors, and pornography. Discussions of special populations examine spouse abuse in the military community, families in which alcohol use or abuse is present, and a prevention program for inmates who are preparing for release into the community. Papers on treatment issues discuss the classification of violent behavior, the use of group counseling, conjoint therapy, the use of a police crisis team consisting of a police officer and a social worker, and the main types of programs available for treating men who abuse their partners. Additional papers describe a film series dramatizing the conflicts and consequences faced by men who batter, procedures for setting up a counseling program for batterers who voluntarily seek help, and the procedures police should use in responding to domestic conflict calls. Figures, chapter reference lists, an index, and an appendix giving the addresses of the organizations which responded to a survey of programs for batterers are provided.
