The factors considered are incumbency, ballot position, prior judicial experience, campaign financing, and prior elective positions. Generally, incumbency is found to be a critical factor, and campaign financing is not. The same factors influence judicial elections in all sections of the country. However, how and to what degree they are manifested vary by section and by the dominant political culture. (Author abstract)
