This article re-examines the question of whether different methods of judicial selection result in the recruitment of individuals with different background characteristics.
Abstract
A comparison was made of the backgrounds of nearly 750 judges initially elected or appointed to California's major trial court. To assess the importance of regional factors, judges from the northern and southern parts of the state were also compared. The implications of the findings for the larger debate over which method is best for selecting state judges are then explored. (Author abstract)
