Six scenarios raise questions about appropriate supervisory behavior by police sergeants who are regularly confronted by management problems. No evaluation of the sergeants' performances are made, but each scenario is followed by a break for audience discussion.
Abstract
The scenarios include a sergeant at a beer party who discusses department policy with his subordinates, a sergeant who refuses to explain an unrequested transfer to an officer and pulls rank to carry out his order, and a sergeant who offers no guidance to a patrol officer who requests help in handling a traffic accident involving a drunk commissioner. The other scenarios concern two patrol officers who, attempting to handle a quarrel between a couple in a parking lot, are interrupted by a sergeant conducting a field observation of their activities and a sergeant who reverses an officer's arrest decision involving a drunken woman driver. The final scenario concerns officers' adherence to basic patrol procedures, the use of deadly force, and the supervisor's role in managing an officer's postshooting trauma. A leader's guide accompanies the film.
