This study presents the historic development and current status of criminology in the Netherlands, fundamental versus applied criminological research, patterns of criminological teaching, sentencing patterns, and crime patterns.
Abstract
Criminology has been an academic subject in the Netherlands since 1918, but only received increased attention since the 1960's, stimulated largely by the work of Buikhuisen, who initiated an elaborate research program dealing with drunken driving, drug abuse, and 'hidden' crime. Criminological research is conducted by the universities and by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Criminology is not presented as a major subject at Dutch universities. Students choose criminology as a minor under other major curriculums. The Dutch Society of Criminology was founded in 1974, and it promotes research, teaching, and the application of research in criminal justice practice.
