This Canadian report comprises an inventory of 34 juvenile delinquency prevention programs described in North American literature.
Abstract
The inventory includes a brief description of selected program models, their implementation requirements, and their relative effectiveness. It is designed for use by government officials, community professionals, program administrators, and youth workers. Although not exhaustive, the inventory presents a variety of program models covering a broad range so that users of the manual will become aware of the possibilities for juvenile delinquency prevention programming. Programs which integrate several different prevention models have been included, as have smaller programs with much narrower focus. Program descriptions have been organized according to the focus of the service, the type of service provided, and the level of prevention. Three levels of prevention are the principal rubric of categorization: societal well-being, social responsibility, and at-risk intervention. Within these, programs are further categorized according to whether the focus is on direct service, indirect service, or opportunity reduction. Each program is then described in terms of its activities, goals, duration, target group, and evidence of effectiveness. Charts, tables, a program index, and a 29-item bibliography are provided.
