Data from the Uniform Crime Reports formed the basis of a summary of statistics on numbers and types of offenses and arrests. A profile of the county describes its physical, social, and cultural characteristics and demographic history and projected future. A study of potential new jail locations defines and evaluates various alternatives and includes notes from a public hearing and planners' comments following the public hearing. A discussion of the county's courts summarizes the caseloads and the times which elapse between the start and conclusion of a case. A study of the jail population presents general statistics, an analysis of the 1972 jail population, and a discussion of the 123 persons who remained in the Washtenaw County Jail for over 50 days. Inventories of correctional facilities and community agencies, an outline of the events which led to the formation of a citizens committee for planning a new correctional system, a statement of the basic problem, a discussion of probation, data tables, request letters, and forms are also included.
