Except for the crime of forcible rape (eighth-ranked) in 1981, Washington has ranked 26th in reported crimes of violence. Reports of aggravated assault have shown a steady increase in both Washington State and the country as a whole for 1960 to 1980. In 1981 there was a slight decline. Reported crimes of burglary (12th-ranked) and larceny (9th-ranked) caused Washington State to be well above the national average of 1981 in the property crimes category. Arrest rate comparisons indicate that Washington arrests are generally in proportion to the incidence of reported crime. On the basis of the male population nationwide, Washington State experiences an average incarceration rate. It ranks 26th on this comparative basis.
