The results presented are interim results for projects which are being implemented in improved form in the third year and for which evaluation designs and data collection arrangements are also being improved. The program rests on the view that the organization of schooling in the United States is related to the causes of juvenile delinquency. Each project entails some reorganization of school policies, practices, and environments to foster the development of social bonds through appropriate educational environments. The projects generally serve grades 6 through 12 in communities with relatively high crime rates and with high rates of delinquency, dropping out of school, suspensions, expulsions, absenteeism, and youth unemployment. This volume gives an overview of the evaluation and includes descriptions of the program, the evaluation methodology, the measures used, and the types of projects and youths involved. It also examines the environmental effect of the alternative education program, the effects of interventions targeted at identifiable groups, and results from each of the project sites.
