Testimony by the Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, Department of Justice describes the Justice Department's steps to improve coordination and cooperation with State and local law enforcement agencies and provide them assistance. The testimony outlines (1) major programs aimed at coordination among Federal, State, and local law enforcement systems; (2) programs for providing direct assistance to State and local law enforcement entities; and (3) the Department's support for proposed legislation which, if enacted, would enable the Federal Government to achieve even greater support of State and local law enforcement endeavors. A representative of the Treasury Department testifies on the activities of its enforcement bureaus in the areas of training, information coordination, and resources provided to States and localities. Testimony from local and State criminal justice professionals reaffirms the importance of cooperation with Federal agencies in matters of concurrent jurisdiction, training, and resource allocation. Particular attention is given to the cooperative effort required in dealing with well-organized and heavily financed illicit drug operations.
