This survey report provides a brief overview of inmates 65 years old or older in the New York State correctional system as of February 1981.
Abstract
The survey found 57 inmates in the older age group, which comprises less than half of one percent of the Department's total inmate population. The majority (63 percent) were between 65 and 69 years of age and only one was female. Of these elderly inmates, 60 percent were aged 65 or older at the time of their last commitment and 70 percent have served 5 years or less. The majority were sentenced for violent personal crimes; 72 percent had prior arrest records. Of eight offenders without a prior record who were committed when over 65 years of age, 5 were committed for murder or manslaughter. In comparison with a 1976 survey on inmates aged 65 or over, there are currently fewer elderly inmates in the Department's custody than in 1975. Tabular data are given.
