The basic function of the arson investigation unit is to prevent incendiary fires. The duties of the unit should include the investigation of every fire and explosion about which there is suspicion or knowledge that the crime of arson has been committed, the detection and apprehension of those who are involved in setting fires, and assistance to the local prosecutor in subsequent litigation, and the investigation of all fire fatalities and serious burn incidents. The unit also investigates other major fire incidents where undetermined cause remains a factor, known accidental cause fires with a dollar loss that exceeds a predetermined minimum amount, reports for the police department concerning arson incidents not previously investigated, and incidents involving juveniles.
