The Family Conciliation Court of Los Angeles County (California) provides a nonadversarial means of settling conflicts within the Superior Court, maximizing participation of the parties involved, and giving them maximum responsibility for their own individual and collective lives.
Abstract
It helps families reconcile and divert from the divorce process or helps them go through the divorce process effectively and settle their differences amicably. Basic services offered include marriage counseling, custody and visitation mediation, premarital consent evaluations, domestic violence restraining orders and counseling, and seminars for families. The Conciliation Court consists of a supervising judge and professional staff which includes the director of the Family Mediation and Conciliation Services; a principal family counselor supervising the central district; a principal family counselor for training, research, and staff development; and 15 senior family counselors. The article discusses counseling procedures, significant Conciliation Court statistics, and other Conciliation Court services to the community. Sample information sheets and forms are appended.
