Abstract
A discussion of innovative methods for financing prison education in the United States is followed by an examination of the requirement of restitution for juvenile offenders as an alternative disposition. An evaluation of the general content and process of detention education suggests that educational programs in juvenile detention facilities are in need of greater definition. A study weighs the realization of their potential by Lorton (Virginia) inmates who were involved in an education program with the University of the District of Columbia by comparing them to other, nonparticipating inmates. Discussed in the next article are the effects of three instructional strategies (verbal/analytic, visual/spatial, mixed) on juvenile delinquents of differing learning styles. Also reported is the incidence of communication disorders of male inmates in the Texas Department of Corrections. Concluding papers identify the benefits derived from drug education for former abusers and offenders and the effects of a self-esteem counseling group on male prisoners' self-concept. Individual papers contain tabular data and references. For individual articles, see NCJ 92307-13.
