The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence of communication disorders in two random samples of male inmates, one group entering and another group exiting the Texas Department of Corrections.
Abstract
The incidence of disorder in the two groups was compared with the normal population to determine if there was a higher occurrence among prisoners. Those exhibiting a disorder were compared on a number of demographic variables. The study indicated that the incidence of disorder among prisoners was not dramatically higher as the majority of other studies in this area have indicated. Positive correlations were found between age and hearing loss in the exiting group. A negative correlation was found between educational achievement and articulation disorders in the entering sample. The chi square statistic was significant between race and articulation disorders in both samples. (Author abstract)
