This report presents figures and data tables showing Federal, State, and local levels and trends in public expenditures and employment for criminal justice activities in the United States between fiscal years 1971 and 1979.
Abstract

The activities covered include police protection, judicial activities, legal services and prosecution, public defense, corrections, and a residual category consisting of other criminal justice activities. The expenditure data covers the full fiscal year, while the employment data is for October of each year. The data are based on an annual survey. An introductory narrative summary presents report highlights. Major findings include (1) the steady increase in expenditures during the study period and (2) more money spent by local governments for justice activities than the Federal and State governments combined.
