Some of the basic principles of crime prevention include education about crime prevention techniques, the use of target-hardening practices, and commonsense practices applicable to specific situations. Crime prevention measures reduce opportunities for criminal activity by deterring the criminal, detecting him if he strikes, delaying him so he can be apprehended, and denying him access to targets. Steps for preventing burglary are described, including making it difficult to enter a home, Neighborhood Watch, property identification, and making a security survey. Various steps for reducing auto theft, the theft of checks from the mail, and street crime are also briefly described. In addition to the slides and scripts, advice is also provided for planning and conducting the program, including discussion after the slide presentation.
