This booklet is designed to assist law enforcement agencies and private citizens in establishing Neighborhood Watch programs. It discusses advice on how to enact such a program. The characteristics of the individual neighborhood and its residents will determine which suggestions are adopted. Neighborhood Watch is a way of reducing crime in the community. It involves neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance. Citizens must learn to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods. Steps involved in starting a Neighborhood Watch program include establishing a planning committee, organizing a Neighborhood Watch meeting, organizing the community, and choosing crime prevention program agendas. Supplemental crime prevention programs, such as home security and Operation Identification should also be implemented. Appendixes include a family data sheet, suspect and vehicle description forms, and a neighborhood data sheet.
