This program of law studies should improve the citizenship skills of students (upper elementary, middle, and high school) by providing them with an operational understanding of the law, legal processes, and legal institutions.
Abstract
The goal of the program is achieved through a system of teacher education; social studies teachers are introduced to important legal concepts and provided with classroom materials and strategies for teaching legal topics appropriate for their grade level and subject matter. Three sample units, representative of 30 developed for use in the social studies program for grades 5 through 12. have been selected to illustrate the operation of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights at three different school levels. Each unit has a teacher's lesson plan, specific teacher and student activities, strategies, and questions for teaching the unit. The Handbook of Strategies (included in the appendix) follows the lesson plan. (Author summary modified)
