This training materials package provides a variety of activities designed to give students a comprehensive overview of the functioning of the criminal justice system, the problems of dealing with crime while protecting the rights of the accused, and past, current, and proposed reforms.
Abstract
After viewing the filmstrips, answering the review and discussion questions found in the manual, and taking part in the suggested followup activities, students should be able to outline the role of police officers and explain the steps of a criminal prosecution from the arrest through trial and sentencing. In addition, they should be able to state the major objectives and problems of correctional institutions, understand how the Constitution and Bill of Rights guarantee the rights of the accused, and explain how defending the rights of the accused can hamper efforts of the police to apprehend suspects. Finally they should be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of several proposed reforms of police organization, criminal courts, and correctional institutions. The teacher's guide includes a glossary, a copy of the Bill of Rights, and a list of 20 references. Hypothetical case examples illustrate the filmstrip narratives.
