As part of Illinois Arson Control Assistance Program, this instructional package for 10-14 year-olds focuses on the basic scientific aspects and capabilities of fire, basic firesafety practices, and several aspects of the problem of arson.
Abstract
The first unit, which deals with the scientific aspects and capabilities of fire includes defining the components of the fire 'triangle' (elements necessary to start and sustain fire) and imparting knowledge about the three types of heat movement (conduction, convection, and radiation). The second unit, which addresses fire safety, has the objectives of enabling students to demonstrate (1) an understanding of the need for smoke detectors, (2) knowledge of the importance of exit drills in the home, (3) a knowledge of what to do when a home fire strikes, (4) an understanding of good babysitting emergency and firesafety practices, and (5) knowledge of general outdoor firesafety habits and reasons for them, as well as indicating the dangers of flammable liquids and knowledge of flammable liquid fire prevention and control. The third unit discusses the costs of arson, categorized as financial, property, and human as well as burns (what they are, their classifications, their proper treatment). The firesafety procedure of stop, drop, and roll to smother clothing flames is outlined. The varied motives for arson are also considered. Emphasis is placed on arson being a serious crime. The units include statements of goals and objectives, instructions to the teacher about conducting the unit, and information to be learned by the students.
