Abstract

It also examines changes in the geographic distribution of prisoners; composition of the inmate population by race, sex, and Hispanic origin; incarceration rates for minorities; and the rates of various types of admissions and releases. The data include all prisoners subject to confinement whether or not they were in physical custody. Highlights include data on increases in short-sentence inmates due to changing laws, geographic variations in the use of conditional release, the shift toward supervised mandatory release, and the large increase in the number of mandatory releases. Maps, tables, and figures are included. Appendixes present extensive data tables, a description of the data collection method, State-by-State explanations, and historical data.
