Established in 1967, the Hawaii program aids victims of criminal acts by providing compensation for victims of certain crimes or dependents of deceased victims. It also provides for the indemnification of private citizens for personal injury or property damage suffered in the prevention of crime or the apprehension of a criminal. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Commission received 553 applications and awarded compensation in 389 cases during the year covered by the report. The majority of the awards were for assault cases. The awards averaged $983 and covered medical expenses, funeral and burial expenses, loss of earning power, pecuniary loss, and pain and suffering.
