Abstract
The authors describe the advantages and disadvantages of burglar alarm systems, door and window protection systems, and garage and driveway protection systems. Tips are supplied on apartment, condominium, and high-rise security, as well as on special measures for property protection. Issues relating to personal safety are considered in chapters on eliminating home hazards, initiating security measures before and during vacations, and special techniques for self-protection, ranging from rape self-defense to use of bulletproof clothing. Chapters are also devoted to auto theft prevention devices and to types of insurance that cover citizens' property losses resulting from criminal activities or natural disasters. The book closes with a discussion of the WhistleSTOP Program, tips for self-protection of women, and guidelines for effective testimony as a witness. The devices discussed in the book are illustrated with pictures and diagrams; appendixes contain an extensive residential security checklist, an inventory of valuables, and a list of names and addresses of manufacturers.
