Link analysis is a valuable tool for the study and investigation of complex arson-for-profit cases.
Abstract
Much like computer flowcharting, link analysis is a visual representation of individuals, associates, and businesses. Linking simplifies complex investigations by showing relationships and degrees of involvement among individuals and organizations or businesses, thus enabling many investigators to understand the parts played by people in a conspiracy. The charts also show the sequence of events as they occur and provide a visual description of what has happened. A link chart includes circles to indicate individuals, rectangles or squares to show organizations, triangles to depict involvement with organizations, solid lines to show a strong link and broken lines for weak or unsubstantiated associations. Link analysis helps in identifying scenario patterns, developing investigative strategies, separating insurance and criminal investigation functions, predicting cause and effect relationships, and providing a clear format for court presentations. This kind of anlaysis is especially helpful for multiagency task forces that work to combat arson. A sample scenario, flow chart, and explanation of symbols are included. Two footnotes and three references are appended.
