Following the presentation of some general background information on rural crime, this crime prevention manual discusses community-wide cooperative, comprehensive crime prevention programs; security for farm and home; personal safety; and crime prevention for youth and the elderly.
Abstract
The introductory sections on rural crime focus on the extent of rural crime, steps in crime prevention program development, a list of resources for crime prevention programing, property identification systems to deter rustlers and thieves, vandalism in rural areas, personal safety for women, and steps in conducting successful community surveys. The manual provides information on crime prevention programs in which neighbors cooperate in a systematic way to reduce the opportunities for crime in their community. Neighborhood Watch is presented as an example of this approach. One section discusses various approaches for improving the security of residences, farm buildings, equipment, livestock, etc. A section on personal security focuses on preventing and protecting oneself from violence against the person, such as domestic assault, assault by a stranger, and rape. The last two sections of the manual contain information for special age groups. Materials for youth includes content for teaching youth about crime prevention, a crime prevention program for school children, and information for 4-H programing. The section devoted to the elderly addresses the specific problems of this age group, including dealing with the fear of crime and developing a program for senior citizen safety.
