This article employs National Crime Survey data on stranger assaults to examine the role of victim resistance in warding off attack and reducing the risk of injury.
Abstract
The tactics which victims adopt in the face of potential violence may themselves be violent or nonviolent. The survey data suggest that nonviolent resistance may be effective in warding off attack and preventing injury, but that violent resistance seems to exacerbate both of those outcomes.
