Increasing caseloads have prompted courts to consider new procedures for resolving cases more expeditiously. This management note reports on an experimental program introduced in California's Third District Court of Appeal from the perspective of attorney staff responsible for processing selected cases.
Abstract
We discuss how the program affected case processing and court staff responsibilities. Our basic conclusion is that the changes required to implement and maintain the program beyond a pilot period did not impose undue administrative burdens. Moreover, we believe there are some qualitative improvements in the appeals process in addition to the observed reductions in case processing time. (Publisher abstract)
