Abstract
Graphic data show the number of juveniles in public facilities for 1977, 1979, and 1982 by reason held (delinquency, status offense, and 'other'), and tabular data cover selected characteristics of public juvenile custody residents and facilities for 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1982. For the annual period, data show the average daily number of residents, number of admissions and departures, expenditures, and per capita operating costs. Data for the 1-day count cover number of residents (by sex, juvenile, and adult), number of facilities (short-term, long-term), number of staff (full-time and part-time), and juveniles per full-time staff member. A table dealing with offenses of delinquents in public juvenile custody facilities for 1982 presents number of total offenses by offense category as well as by sex for 'all delinquents,' 'detained,' and 'committed.' The crime categories are violent crime, property crime, alcohol-related, drug-related, and public order. Another table contains statistics on selected characteristics of juvenile custody residents and facilities by type of facility for 1979 and 1982. Data are classified for all facilities, short-term facilities, and long-term facilities. Characteristics of residents are presented by sex, average age, race, ethnicity, physical environment (institutional facilities, open facilities), custodial status, reason held, and average length of stay. Characteristics of facilities (number) are presented by physical environment, community access, and security level. The final table provides data on selected characteristics of public juvenile custody systems by State for 1979 and 1982. This includes number of facilities, number of staff, and expenditure amounts. Statistics on number of residents present the absolute number and number per 100,000 age-eligible population.
