Abstract
The directory defines mental handicaps as deficits in intellectual functioning which result in some difficulty in coping with the demands of society. An introduction discusses the philosophy of normalization, the identification of mentally handicapped offenders, the difference between rehabilitation and habilitation, and guidelines that should be used by probation and parole officers who work with mentally handicapped offenders. Four types of disabilities -- autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, and epilepsy -that may be related to mental handicaps are also described. Housing services listed include apartments, approved homes, independent living services, group homes, halfway houses, hostels, housing registries, and a residential facility. Counseling services listed include alcohol and drug treatment, group therapy, self-help groups, services at Calgary General Hospital, and individual and family counseling. Employment services included agencies, counseling, employment preparation workshops, employment programs, support groups, and vocational workshops. For each program or agency, the address, telephone number, contact person, size, referral procedures, eligibility criteria, purpose, and program are listed.
