This report describes the organization and operation of the criminal justice system in Pennsylvania and is designed as a basic text and resource document for the training of criminal justice personnel.
Abstract
An overview of crime in Pennsylvania presents data from Uniform Crime Reports and victimization surveys. Figures and a narrative explain the series of decisionmaking points which make up the criminal justice process in the State. The nature and roles of the agencies making up the law enforcement, court, institutional and noninstitutional corrections systems, and juvenile justice systems are described. Seven other State agencies which are relevant to the criminal justice process are also described. The relationship of the State budget to the criminal justice system is also outlined. Figures, tables, and maps are included. A glossary and a list of State associations which are affiliated with various components of the criminal justice system are appended.
