An introductory discussion of black history focuses on the African traditions of using white palm wine, the European influence on such practices, and the use of alcohol as a means to control people throughout the American colonial, pre-Civil War, Reconstruction, and segregation periods. It also reviews drinking patterns of today's black youth. The next chapter presents nine alcohol prevention strategies suitable for use with black adolescents, including culture-specific ideas, liquor advertising culture-specific ideas, liquor advertising surveys, and drinking practices of other cultures. Suggestions on starting prevention programs address community mobilization, agency commitment, cosponsorship, networking, assessing needs, a community workshop, planning, grantsmanship, and outreach. A chapter on evaluation discusses problem assessment, defining goals and measures, data collection, analysis, and measuring achievement. A resource section provides information on operating black programs, public and private funding sources, and publications on fundraising and program planning. The appendixes offer program planning materials, aids to help conduct a community workshop, a glossary, and over 60 references.
