Six articles focus on various aspects of law enforcement administration.
Abstract
The first article discusses the Assessment established by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in 1973. IACP assessors measure 21 dimensions for each candidate being considered for police chief for a local law enforcement agency. They report the results to those in charge of the actual selection. The next article provides a sketch of the model disaster preparedness program in Coronado, Calif. Specific incident plans, reliance on volunteers, and municipal recognition of the importance of this division are among the many key elements of successful program. A discussion of 'the supervisor's role in handling complaints and grievances' illustrates ways the supervisor can reduce the frequency of complaints and how to effectively deal with complaints. Additional articles focus on four steps necessary for the handling of disasters in prison facilities and review the participatory management program used by the police department in Scottsdale, Ariz., to improve productivity and quality of service. A final article discusses the efficacy of psychological screening. Main concerns that screening addresses include the ability to learn, emotional stability, stress tolerance, and affirmative action. A sidebar discusses the success the Blythe Police Department (Calif.) had with screening.
