Abstract
The conference addresses deal with the importance of cooperation among the various components of the criminal justice system and the involvement of the public in the criminal justice enterprise, as well as with Federal efforts to counter violent crime and drug offenses, the contributions of research to policing, trends in crime and policing, and the need of local policing for funding from State and Federal levels. They also focus on traffic law enforcement from a national perspective, particularly countering drunken driving. The Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (Northern Ireland) explains how the police in Northern Ireland are combating terrorism in their jurisdiction. Speaker remarks are presented from the following workshops: police civil and vicarious liability, juvenile services, prearrest screening for persons suspected of driving while intoxicated (DWI), DWI sobriety checkpoints, emergency/disaster preparedness, employment issues, international terrorism, the Lindbergh kidnapping, law enforcement systems, narcotics and dangerous drugs, the 'oasis' technique (a neighborhood crime prevention approach), and police communications. Other workshops cover police responsibility for protecting the public from hazardous materials, private funding of police training, public and private sector law enforcement, State and local training programs, community resources in crime prevention, and white-collar crime.
