Extensive data tables show the numbers and characteristics of persons received at Virginia's county and city jails and city jail farms during the 1983 fiscal year and the numbers and characteristics of persons confined in local jails during the fiscal year.
Abstract
Some of those in the latter category were committed to jail in a previous fiscal year and not released prior to the beginning of the current year. The statistics show the breakdowns by race and sex for each type of offense and each age group. Statistics for individual institutions give breakdowns by month. Comparisons over the past 10 years, a capacity and population analysis, prisoner days, and appendixes listing localities using other county or city jails and jails owned or used by more than one county or city are also provided.
