One of the typical functions of a spouse abuse program is the operation of a crisis line, often run by volunteers. Volunteers play crucial roles by performing clerical tasks, working on the board of directors, providing child care for abused spouses, assisting in shelter management, offering transportation, making repairs at the shelter, and serving as advocates. Male as well as female volunteers can be used on crisis teams, in public relations, on special projects, and in operating safe homes. The manual includes job descriptions for volunteers, suggestions for recruiting and screening volunteers, and explanations of the four phases of volunteer training (orientation, preservice training, on-the-job training, and inservice training). Supervision and recognition are also discussed. A 13-item annotated bibliography is included.
