The Director of the United States Bureau of Prisons noted the need to use proper design to avoid a wide variety of problems in prisons and the need to deal with prison overcrowding. A discussion of court design emphasized the need to build in flexibility and seek guidance on court functions during the design process. Other presentations focused on the design of jails, the role of the National Institute of Corrections in the design of correctional facilities, the codes of the National Fire Protection Association, and the liability of architects involved in renovation projects. Illustrations showing designs of some of the facilities discussed are included.
