These 92 references and accompanying discussion of the problem of prison overcrowding and proposed solutions cover the period 1971-83, with emphasis on the last 6 years.
Abstract
Most of the citations relate to American correctional institutions, although a few deal with these institutions in Great Britain. Included are newspaper articles, periodical articles, United States Government publications, books, and monographs. Prison construction, emergency release laws, community service sentences, and victim restitution programs are discussed as ways of relieving overcrowding. The effects of mandatory sentences and sentencing guidelines are also discussed.
